Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail

The city bought the abandoned CSX corridor in December 1992 through the Florida Greenways and Trails Program. Today the 100-foot right of way runs about 14.5 miles from Imeson Road to the town of Baldwin, with a 12-foot paved trail for walkers, cyclists and skaters and an equestrian trail beside it. The route is flat and runs through rural land with plenty of trees and wildlife, the city says. About 8.5 miles of unpaved spur trails on the buffer properties are open for day hiking and horseback riding. City trail page.

Park entry is $5 a car (up to six people) or $3 per walker or cyclist. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during daylight saving time and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in standard time, which returns Sunday, Nov. 1. 904-255-6767.

The Emerald Trail

Groundwork Jacksonville and the city are building the Emerald Trail, which will encompass more than 30 miles of trails, greenways and parks around the urban core and link at least 14 historic neighborhoods to downtown, Hogans Creek, McCoys Creek and the St. Johns River, according to Groundwork Jacksonville. Its map shows about half of the trail in design, under construction or complete. Check Groundwork’s page for the segments open now.
