A little history

The festival began on Oct. 24, 1980, as the Mayport and All That Jazz Festival, founded by Mayor Jake Godbold; nearly 25,000 people came to see Dizzy Gillespie. It later moved to Metropolitan Park, added the piano competition in 1983 and moved to the downtown streets and Memorial Day weekend in 2009, according to the festival’s history page. The organizer calls it one of the largest free jazz festivals in the country.
