Beaches Energy customers

Beaches Energy’s outages page lists a 24-hour emergency service line, 904-247-6171, for outages, downed lines and trees or limbs in lines. It also offers outage alerts by enrollment and a map of affected areas and restoration progress. Before the power goes out

From JaxReady’s power outage guide:

  • If anyone in your home relies on powered medical equipment, sign up for the city’s Special Medical Needs registry.
  • Sign up for AlertJax and watch weather reports.
  • Install battery-backed carbon monoxide detectors on every level.
  • Keep phones charged and gas tanks full; put thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer.

During an outage

  • Use flashlights, not candles.
  • Run generators, camp stoves and charcoal grills outdoors only, at least 20 feet from windows. Never heat your home with a gas stove or oven.
  • Stay away from low-hanging or downed lines.
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed: food stays cold about four hours in the fridge and about 48 hours in a full freezer.
  • Unplug appliances and electronics to protect them from surges when power returns.
  • Treat a dark traffic signal as a four-way stop.
  • Check on older neighbors and young children, who are most at risk in extreme heat or cold.

After the power comes back

JaxReady’s rule: when in doubt, throw it out. Discard food that has been at 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that smells, looks or feels wrong. If a life depends on refrigerated medicine, ask a doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Storm season

Right now (Oct. 9), the National Weather Service has a flood watch and coastal flood advisory for Duval County and Hurricane Isaias is in the Gulf; see our hurricane prep guide for zones, shelters and alerts.

What this means for you

  • Know your utility and save its outage number in your phone.
  • Stay away from downed lines and report them to the utility.
  • Register for the medical needs list before storm season if you need power for equipment.
