Jacksonville collects garbage and yard waste weekly and recycling every other week. Out by 6 a.m. Only Thanksgiving and Christmas shift pickups. 630-CITY.
Last checked Oct. 9, 2026. Sources: the City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division, its garbage service standards, holiday schedule and curbside recycling rules.
Jacksonville and Duval County share one government, and the city’s Solid Waste Division runs curbside collection for homes across the consolidated city, using its own crews and two contract haulers. Garbage and yard waste go weekly; recycling goes every other week. Everything must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on your day, and not before 5 p.m. the night before.

Your collection day
There is no single citywide map of days on the city’s pages. Your garbage, recycling and yard waste days depend on your address, and the fastest way to find them is the Waste Wizard, which also prints a calendar and sends reminders. If you can’t find it, call 630-CITY.
Who empties your cart depends on where you live. The city lists three residential haulers:
| Hauler | Phone | How garbage goes out |
|---|---|---|
| City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division | 904-630-2489 | Your own bags or cans, 45 gallons and 40 pounds at most |
| Meridian Waste | 904-701-1770 | Your own bags or cans, 45 gallons and 40 pounds at most |
| Waste Pro of Florida | 904-731-7288 | City-issued garbage cart (automated) |
Recycling is automated everywhere: it goes in the city’s yellow-lid cart. In the city and Meridian areas, cans must have handles and tight-fitting lids. Report a missed pickup if it has not been collected by 6 p.m. on your day; the city asks you to call or log it the following day.
Cart rules
- Set carts at least 2 feet apart and 3 feet from mailboxes, poles and parked cars.
- Wheels face away from the road, lids fully closed. Extra waste waits for next week.
- No piles next to mailboxes, fire hydrants, utility boxes or under low wires.
- Don’t block sidewalks, driveways or travel lanes.
What goes in the yellow-lid recycling cart
From the city’s curbside recycling page. Items should be empty, clean and dry, and loose, never bagged.
- Paper: mail, office paper, newspapers, magazines, paperback books, brown paper bags, cereal boxes and flattened cardboard cut to 2 by 3 feet or smaller.
- Metal: steel food cans, aluminum cans and aluminum baking pans.
- Plastic: containers numbered 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7, including detergent and cleaner bottles.
- Cartons: milk, juice boxes, soup and broth cartons.
- Glass: green, brown or clear bottles and jars (lids go in the garbage).
- Keep out: plastic bags and wrap (No. 4), all foam and No. 6 plastic, aerosol cans, shredded paper, batteries, needles, cables, food and yard waste.
The city’s rule of thumb: when in doubt, throw it out.
Yard waste
Yard waste is collected weekly and never goes in a city cart. If it shares a day with garbage, keep the piles apart. The city’s yard waste standards:
- Up to 5 cubic yards a week, about 30 bags of 32 gallons.
- No bag or item over 40 pounds; limbs no longer than 5 feet and no thicker than 6 inches.
- Bag leaves and clippings and seal the bags. Palm fronds and shrub clippings are fine.
- Treated or painted wood, fencing and landscape timbers go with garbage, not yard waste.
- Waste from a tree service you hired is the company’s to haul away.
Bulk items, appliances and tires
Bulk items such as mattresses, sofas, chairs and grills go out by 6 a.m. on collection day, within 5 feet of the curb. Wrap and tape glass; cut carpet, fencing and other pieces to 5 feet or shorter. Appliances and tires must be scheduled through MyJax or 630-CITY.
Small home projects: in the city and Meridian areas, up to 1 cubic yard of building materials a week goes out with garbage. In the Waste Pro area, up to 2 cubic yards goes out every other week on bulk day. Contractors must haul away their own debris.
Holidays
The city says office closures do not change collection. Only Thanksgiving and Christmas move pickups, per the holiday schedule:
- Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26: Thursday customers are picked up Saturday, Nov. 28.
- Christmas, Friday, Dec. 25: Friday customers are picked up Saturday, Dec. 26.
Every other day of both weeks runs as normal.
Paint, chemicals and electronics
Hazardous waste is illegal in curbside trash. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2675 Commonwealth Ave. takes paint, pool chemicals, motor oil, propane, fluorescent bulbs, car batteries and electronics. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and is free for Duval County residents, up to 27 gallons of paint and 27 gallons of motor oil in 30 days. Televisions are limited to three per visit.
The city also runs mobile collection events from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The next one listed is Saturday, Oct. 10, at Mandarin Park, 14780 Mandarin Road, for Duval residents only.
What it costs
The residential solid waste fee is billed on your property tax bill as a non-ad valorem assessment, not as a separate bill. For questions about the fee, call the Solid Waste Division at 904-255-7500.
