Where to get barbecue in Jacksonville: San Marco, Avondale and more

Jacksonville’s barbecue restaurants are spread out, not clustered: two sit in the older neighborhoods south and west of downtown, San Marco on Kings Avenue and Avondale on St. Johns Avenue, and the rest are on the big roads, University Boulevard, Atlantic Boulevard, San Jose Boulevard in Mandarin, and Lane Avenue and Blanding Boulevard on the Westside.

How we made this list. We started with OpenStreetMap records inside Jacksonville’s city limits, the same data behind our local directory, and checked every place against its own website on Oct. 10, 2026. Locations in Jacksonville Beach and Orange Park are left out, because they are outside the city. Places whose own site was down or would not show its locations are left out too. The Bearded Pig on Kings Avenue in San Marco is a smokehouse with a full bar. Its site says the meat is dry-rubbed and smoked low and slow, drawing on Texas brisket and Carolina pork, and lists brisket, pulled pork and house-made sausage. It caters events from tailgates to weddings.

Mission BBQ on Blanding Boulevard on the Westside is the chain’s Jacksonville restaurant; its page calls it the Orange Park location, but the address is inside the city. It takes catering orders on the same phone line and closes on eight major holidays, its page says.

Mojo Bar-B-Que on University Boulevard is part of Mojo BBQ, which describes itself as a barbecue, Southern food and craft cocktail group with eight locations in North and Central Florida built around barbecue, blues and bourbon. The site posts this location’s hours as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for “Sunday to Monday”; call to confirm the days.

Mojo No. 4 on St. Johns Avenue in Avondale is the group’s Avondale restaurant. Its site lists a covered front patio where dogs are welcome, with water bowls on hand, and a weekday happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m.

Sonny’s BBQ is a Florida barbecue chain with three restaurants in the city: Atlantic Boulevard near Kernan, South Lane Avenue on the Westside and San Jose Boulevard in Mandarin. Its pages say the meat is slow-smoked, and the menu runs from brisket to salads, with its own sweet tea.
